Description
On Jan 20, 1499 AD, Michelangelo carved this statue for the St. Peter's Bascilla.
The Pieta is a famous statue that depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the crucifixion by the Roman governor. On the statue, a scar is seen under Jesus' ribs, and he wore a natural expression on the face. Lying on Maria's lap, his head leaned back and his bent body is as slender as a gymnast, which showed the weakness and hopelessness of death and expresses the greatness of motherly love. This artwork caused a sensation in the entire city of Rome when it was first displayed and is an iconic piece in the history of art.
