Description
On Dec 27, AD 1092, the first instrument that can be used for astronomical observation, demonstration, and timekeeping was invented.
On this day, the astronomical clock tower was finally completed after 4 years of construction, headed by Su Song. This tower is 12m high and 7m wide with 3 levels. The armillary sphere on the top level is for observing the movement of the stars, the celestial globe on the second level allows the device to rotate, and clepsydra and clock devices are placed on the bottom level. Powered by water, the device rotates once every 40s and a small wooden figure will appear holding a time sign every 15 mins. This is similar to the modern astronomical clocks.
