Description
On Sep 10, 1774, the outside world found out about these statues on Easter Island for the first time.
Moai were discovered by Captain Cook. During a passionate cruise, he landed on this small island and saw the aborigines holding a sacrifice. Due to the language barrier, Captain Cook never got to know the purpose and meaning of the event. He wrote it down in his diary, "These barbarians sent a Pirate-like statue to the stone island and fixed it there. Then, they began to dance around it. This is really a strange ceremony."
