Description
On Jan 26, 1830, Delacroix created this painting to commemorate the July Revolution.
On this day, Delacroix finalized the painting on the hundreds of sketches of the street battles of the July Revolution. It shows the citizens of Paris in an uprising to overthrow the Bourbon dynasty. In this battle, a girl named Lessing first raised the tricolor flag, which symbolizes the French republic, on the barricade. The whole painting takes the form of a vertical composition. The fallen corpses, the fighting warriors, and the girl holding high the French flag formed a stable and dynamic triangle. The painted witnessed this tragic and intense scene with his own eyes. Filled with righteous indignation, he determined to paint a portrait to commemorate the event.
