Description
On Dec 6, 552 BC, Darius the Great carved the cliffs of the Behistun village to mark his achievements.
Darius I built the world's first great empire across Asia, Europe, and Africa. To praise himself, he ordered people to carve his achievements in different Babylonian dialects on the cliff. This was known as the Behistun Inscription. It also included his image of standing upright, holding the bow with his left hand, and pointing his right finger to the sky. The Ahura Mazda in the center shows his respect for God. It was mainly to establish the legitimacy of Darius' succession to the throne, to boast his achievements, and to express that his kingship was endorsed by Ahura Mazda, the God.
