Description

On Jan 11, 1913, sculptor Erik Erikson created the bronze mermaid statue as a symbol of Denmark.

Jacob, the founder of Carlsberg Brewery, donated money to build this bronze statue. It is inspired by "The Little Mermaid" written by Andersen. Her unique charm and tragic destiny have moved Jacob to make a statue for her. The statue was placed in shallow seawater, with several pieces of granite piled underneath an oval granite as base. After the completion of the statue, it became a famous icon of Denmark.
