Description

On Jul 18, 1873, Ilya Repin created this painting that could represent the Russian spirit.

Repin spent two years creating this painting before he could successfully express the unique Russian identity. The painting features a group of ragged and exhausted trackers digging the cargo ship, struggling to move forward under the hot sun. The background is dark and gloomy, and the empty space creates a sense of melancholy and helplessness. It expresses the deep emotions of a tracker. On the burnt-yellow river bank, a lively youth in red is staring into the distance while basking his face under the sun. Repin expressed his pursuit of freedom in this painting.
