Description
On Feb 26, 1978 AD, the Cloisters Cards became one of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collections.
The Cloisters Cards are the oldest full deck of playing cards in the world. Dating back to the fourteenth century, these cards feature unique symbols such as a horn, dog, collar, dog leash, and noose, unlick the diamond or heart symbols commonly seen today. Interestingly, the deck was undervalued in its earliest auction, selling for a mere $3,000 to an antique dealer. However, five years later, the dealer sold the deck to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for a net profit of $140,000.
